Solutions provided
Styles Façade Solutions was engaged to clean the Portland stone and Cornish grey granite façade of The Ritz Hotel, London. Discoloured streaking and grime cover the carved mascarons and upper storeys, illustrating the weathered condition of the stonework prior to the Façade Gommage cleaning process.
CLEANING UP THE RITZ
Built in the Franco-American style, the Grade II listed The Ritz opened its doors to paying guests in 1906. This was the second hotel launched by Swiss hotelier César Ritz after the opening of Hôtel Ritz Paris in 1898. Its prominent location in the heart of Picadilly soon became the essential meeting place for London’s high society, particularly after the then Prince of Wales (the future Edward VIII) made the venue fashionable – owing in no small part to his well-known penchant for the hotel’s cakes).
The 5-star hotel’s impressive Portland stone and Cornish grey granite façade has made it one of the capital’s most enduring hospitality icons. However, over time, the British weather and urban pollution have inevitably taken their toll on the appearance of the façade.
