Styles Façade Solutions® (formerly Thomann-Hanry®) was appointed for the restaurant facade restoration of the Grade II listed stucco building, 9 Conduit Street, beginning with a detailed survey and independent paintwork analysis, which identified lead-based paint requiring compliance with CLAW regulations.
With the restaurant remaining fully operational, the 240m² façade was scaffolded and enclosed within bespoke high-end hoarding to protect guests while preserving business as usual — a hallmark of our commercial façade restoration approach.
Our painting and restoration teams delivered a two-month stone commercial façade restoration London project, repairing Roman stucco and mouldings by hand. FROM SKETCH TO FINAL PAINTED MASTERPIECE
Designed in 1779 by English Gothic architect James Wyatt, whose distinguished career spanned work on Fonthill Abbey, Ashridge and Oriel College, alongside royal commissions at Frogmore and Windsor Castle - 9 Conduit Street is a triumph of Georgian design. The architecture features a giant order of Ionic pilasters spanning the first and second floors, complemented by an enriched frieze and cornice, and an attic storey with a classical cornice and blocking course.
On the ground floor, which is rusticated up to the plat band, the imposing entrance is flanked by Doric columns with a fluted frieze and matching cornice. Of added historical note, it was also one of London’s first buildings to make use of innovative Roman cement.
Throughout its history, the property has been home to a wide variety of societies and institutions, reputedly including cyclists, psychologists and balloonists and, more reliably, the Suffragette movement, Christian Dior and the RIBA. Since 2023, the internationally acclaimed restaurant, Sketch, has called the property home. Boasting three Michelin stars and regularly ranked among the world's 20 best dining destinations, the meteoric success of Sketch is simply the latest chapter in the rich and storied history of this Grade II listed townhouse.
Styles Façade Solutions® exposes significant render failure and brickwork damage on a column base at 9 Conduit Street, London, during restoration. With deteriorated plaster stripped away, the underlying masonry is laid bare, revealing the structural repairs needed before the façade can be made good.
RIGOROUS TESTING AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Styles Façade Solutions® was appointed to carry out a restaurant facade restoration, sympathetically restoring the impressive stucco façade of this Grade II listed building. Our initial step was to conduct a detailed survey. As part of this assessment, we commissioned an independent paintwork analysis to ensure best practice and to detect any hazardous substances, such as lead and arsenic, which were commonly used in exterior paints during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The site was found to have lead-based paints used across the entire façade. As a result, the site was required to conform to Control of Lead At Work (CLAW) regulations for its safe and compliant disposal. The survey also enabled our specialists to identify the correct types of lime render required to restore and redefine intricate architectural features, such as the arris details.
With the world-famous restaurant remaining fully operational during the restoration process, preventing any exposure of lead particulates to the venue's interior was paramount. Due to this, combined with the intricate restoration required on the ornate stucco façade, the decision was taken to scaffold the 240m2 façade and enclose it within specifically designed, high-end hoarding. This protected the restaurant's elite clientele and prestigious image, allowing for 'business as usual' beneath the works.
HERITAGE CRAFTSMANSHIP AND STUCCO RESTORATION
The physical works were executed entirely by hand by Styles Façade Solutions®’ dedicated painting and restoration teams to a meticulous heritage grade finish. The two-month project entailed a complete exterior building restoration, encompassing expert repairs to the Roman stucco on flat surfaces and intricate mouldings, many of which had to be painstakingly reconstructed.
All previously painted masonry surfaces were then redecorated with Keim mineral paint, with all woodwork repainted using a premium four-coat Dulux system. Specialist lead repairs were carried out to the roofing elements, and ongoing lead testing was conducted within the restaurant and public areas to guarantee absolute safety and monitor any dust settlement from the works.
