1-5 London Wall

London, EC2M 5NS – July 2020

1-5 London Wall required weekend-only work with no scaffolding. Styles Façade Solutions® (formerly Thomann-Hanry®) stepped in with its expert commercial facade cleaning services, using the Façade Gommage cleaning process to restore 1,600m² of Portland stone in just nine days across five weekends. Windows were taped and masked via MEWPs, fully protecting the interior throughout.

This external façade cleaning method uses a self-contained cabin on a truck-mounted hydraulic boom, offering excellent mobility and minimal disruption to occupants—ideal for commercial building cleaning in busy locations.

The low-pressure, water- and solvent-free process removes decades of grime using fine aluminium silicate powder, vacuumed back into the cabin and recycled as road aggregate—showcasing genuinely sustainable commercial façade cleaning services.

ROMAN ROOTS, VICTORIAN ENGINERING AND INNOVATIVE CLEANING

With footings sitting on the remnants of the original Roman wall (built in the second to third century), 1-5 London Wall is a striking, five-storey Neoclassical speculative office development constructed in 1901 to the architectural designs of Gordon & Gunton.

Featuring a majestic and intricate Portland stone façade, with mansard slate roofs flanking the end pavilions on Blomfield Street, the island site is formed of five historic, interlinking, Grade II-listed properties that comprise 1-5 London Wall.

With a round-arched entrance set in a two-storey porch with Ionic columns, in a frontage architecturally characterised by pedimented dormers and rusticated columns, the buildings are a truly impressive monument to Edwardian building craftsmanship.

LOGISTICAL EXCELLENCE IN THE CITY CENTRE

The restoration project at 1-5 London Wall needed to be conducted over weekends and without the need for expensive, time-consuming and unsightly scaffolding. This is where Styles Façade Solutions® was able to deliver the definitive solution.

Using the Façade Gommage cleaning process, the 1,600m2 Portland stone façade was restored back to its original splendour in only nine days, executed over five consecutive weekends. The project commenced with the taping and masking of all windows using MEWPs (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms), ensuring the building’s interior was completely protected from any ingress of dust and particles.

The Façade Gommage cleaning process is carried out from a self-contained cabin attached to a truck-mounted hydraulic boom. This allows for optimal mobility throughout the cleaning process, meaning the entire apparatus can be moved offsite at the end of each shift to prevent disturbance to the building’s occupants and the surrounding area.

CLOSED-SYSTEM CLEANING AND ENVIRONMENTAL CARE

The low-pressure, water- and solvent-free process, gently lifts any surface dirt and grime which has been accumulated over decades to reveal the original stone's colour beneath. The superfine Aluminium silicate powder used in the cleaning process is projected at below 4 Bar pressure.

To prevent the spent powder from settling on the structure, the self-contained cabin acts as a giant vacuum, sucking the material back into the cabin. It is safely collected and returned to the Styles Façade Solutions® yard at the end of the day, to be sent on for recycling as road aggregate.

In just nine days, across five weekends, this example of expert commercial facade cleaning saw the entire frontage of 1-5 London Wall Buildings cleaned and returned to its pristine original appearance, reviving the distinctive white-grey hues of the iconic Portland stone.

“The results are little short of spectacular, with the 120-year-old stonework responding flawlessly to a perfectly matched cleaning technique. With Roman roots and a classic architectural heritage, the London Wall Buildings are a case study in the power of 21st-century restoration.”
